Artwork details confirmed
Using a publicly accessible webcam in Times Square, I created portraits exploring the expansion of surveillance in public spaces after September 11, 2001.
The title references London's 'Ring of Steel,' a network of security cameras developed in response to IRA bombings in the 1990s. Following 9/11, New York City was moving toward a similarly extensive surveillance system.
By turning webcam imagery into paintings, I raise questions about privacy, security, anonymity, and our relationship with the technologically monitored city. Through this series, I seek to make visible a system that largely goes unnoticed, turning the gaze of surveillance back onto the people and spaces it observes.
